About Liberation

Owned by the farmers who grow our food.

Our vision is for smallholder farming communities around the world to thrive. Our purpose is to make sure they realise the full and fair value of their work, from the ground up.

Where it comes from

In 2023, we purchased 418 tonnes of Fairtrade nuts, dried fruits and sesame from smallholder farmers around the world.

Our Story

A company built the other way round.

Liberation Foods CIC was founded in 2007 as the UK's first, and still only, Fairtrade nut company majority-owned by the smallholder farmers who grow our food. Instead of value flowing one way, our co-operative shareholders sit on our board, share in our profits, and shape our direction.

We started because the global nut trade has historically left growers with the smallest slice of the pie. Liberation flips that model: farmers own the majority, set the terms, and benefit from every jar, pouch and bag we sell.

Our Farmers

6,500+ families.
One radical idea.

Farmers should own the brands they grow for. Not as a slogan, as a balance sheet.

Across five regions on three continents, smallholder co-operatives, not investors, hold the majority of Liberation's shares. They appoint directors to our board, vote on our strategy, and take a real share of the profit every product generates.

Conventional nut supply chains squeeze the people at the bottom: long credit terms, opaque pricing and middlemen who absorb the margin. Liberation flips that geometry. We trade direct, we pay Fairtrade minimums and premiums in full, and we make the books legible to the people who grow our food.

That ownership translates into practical things: agronomy training in Kerala, climate-smart agroforestry in Malawi, women's leadership programmes in Nicaragua, biodiversity protection in the Bolivian Amazon. Every jar of peanut butter and bag of cashews carries those decisions inside it.

"When farmers own the brand, every choice has to work for them, not just for shelves in the UK."
